Your Roadmap to College

The mission of the Office of Admissions is to create clear pathways for undergraduate students to inquire, apply, and enroll at NKU.  Choosing a college can be a difficult process.  The staff in the Office of Admissions is here to assist you and make this transition as smooth as possible for you.
NKU is a dynamic university with outstanding academic programs and faculty.  We offer an up close and personal education that uniquely prepares our students for the future.

College Search...Junior & Senior Calendars 

Junior Calendar

Fall of your Junior Year

  • Take challenging courses in high school.  Colleges want to see students challenge themselves with honors and advanced course work
  • Get involved - Most scholarship applications will inquiry about your community service and extra curricular experience

Spring of your Junior Year

  • Make a list of schools your interested in, go online and check out their websites, request they send you information about their college or university 
  • Prepare questions to ask admissions counselors at college fairs
  • Earn college credit during your senior by being an Early Enrollment student at NKU

Summer of your Junior Year

  • Use the summer before your senior year to visit several college campuses

Senior Calendar

August

  • Plan to enroll in high school courses your senior year that meet Kentucky’s Pre-College Curriculum
  • Register to take the ACT or SAT.  If you'd like for your test scores to be sent to NKU, our ACT code is 1566; the SAT code is 1574.

September

  • Enroll in an ACT and/or SAT test preparation course (online quizzes available at www.actstudent.org )
  • Begin a dialogue with your family about choosing a college - everything from cost to size, location to academic standards
  • Prepare questions to ask your NKU admissions counselor when they visit your high school or at a college fair

October

  • Visit several college campuses
  • Begin researching scholarship opportunities

November

  • Begin submitting college applications.  Apply to NKU online keep track of deadlines
  • Draft your scholarship essays and ask for a letters of recommendations for scholarship applications

December

  • Complete your scholarship application
  • Consider re-taking the ACT and/or SAT to improve your scores
  • Use winter break to search free Internet sites for independently funded scholarships (fastweb.com)

January

  • Submit your NKU SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION – our deadline is January 15
  • File your income taxes, as you will need them to finalize the FAFSA. NKU's institutional code is 009275

February

  • Register for a PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov, which will allow you to sign your FAFSA electronically
  • Finish the FAFSA, remember, financial aid is offered on a first come, first need basis

March

  • Watch your mailbox! Scholarship awards are sent during the first week in March
  • March 1, is the Financial Aid Priority Deadline

April

  • Make any last visits to the schools you have been admitted to and make your final decision
  • Consider housing options and submit housing applications
  • Submit your Enrollment Confirmation Form and $75 fee by May 1  

May

  • NKU’s Housing priority deadline is May 1
  • Make plans to attend college orientation, NKU’s New Student Orientation is Northern Exposure

June

  • Have your final high school transcripts sent to NKU
  • Work and save to build your college spending account
