We See Your Potential

The NKU Academy is designed specifically for first-time undergraduate students who would not otherwise be admitted to Northern Kentucky University. NKU Academy participants will be identified from those applicants who have not met our requirements for admission, yet are deemed capable of developing the knowledge, skills and habits necessary for success in college. Admitting these students through the NKU Academy enhances access to higher education as well as the likelihood for student success. NKU Academy scholars engage in a rigorous 5-week program from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. that includes two developmental classes (a combination of English, reading and mathematics) and one credit hour of UNV 101 - Orientation to College and Beyond. Participants who opt to live on campus during the Academy will live together in campus housing during the 5 week term with upper-division students who serve as peer mentors. In addition to their classes, participants will also:

  • Attend daily academic assistance sessions
  • Attend required peer tutoring sessions
  • Develop study skills and interpersonal skills
  • Have regular contact with caring faculty and staff
  • Meet with academic advisors to plan a course of study at NKU
  • Engage in activities designed to become familiar with campus resources
  • Enjoy cultural enrichment activities (include some optional evening activities)
  • Have fun and make friends

NKU Academy scholars who successfully complete their summer classes are eligible to continue as degree-seeking students in the fall semester as they continue receiving support to facilitate their success in their first college year.

Application Process

Individuals must apply for admission to Northern Kentucky University through the admissions processes. Applicants are encouraged to apply early since space in the NKU Academy is limited. Applications for the Academy will be accepted until maximum enrollment is reached.

Financial Assistance

The R. C. Durr Award provides financial assistance for NKU Academy scholars demonstrating financial need, therefore, scholars must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for this award. Northern Kentucky University provides this assistance because federal financial aid cannot be used to defray the cost of the NKU Academy.

Financial aid for the NKU Academy will be awarded on May 1.  All FAFSA information and any additional information requested from the NKU Office of Student Financial Assistance must be received no later than April 25. It generally takes 4-6 weeks from the date of submission for your FAFSA to be received by the University. You are encouraged to submit your FAFSA no later than February 15, 2008 to have the best chance of completing all paperwork required to be considered for the R. C. Durr Award.

Once scholars successfully complete the NKU Academy and are admitted to NKU, they are eligible to receive federal financial aid. The same FAFSA will be used if scholars wish to receive financial aid for the 2008-2009 academic year. You may complete the FAFSA through the Student Financial Assistance website.
